ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.97%, Dragged down by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 05 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.97% and settled at 8,157.80.  All of the 11 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Financial are the top-losing sector, losing 2.89% and 1.56% in their index value.

Gold Road Resources Limited (ASX: GOR) and Block Inc. (ASX: XYZ) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 9.427% and 5.051% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Siteminder Limited (ASX: SDR) and NUIX Limited (ASX: NXL) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.592% and 7.059% in their stock prices.

  • Gold Road Resources saw a 9.6% surge after revealing that it had accepted a sweeter takeover offer from South Africa’s Gold Fields, which raised its bid to $3.7 billion.
  • Endeavour received positive investor response, with shares rising 1.7%, after the company projected "flat to modest" growth in retail sales for the rest of the fourth quarter.
  • Smartpay shares soared by 22.4% after the company entered exclusive negotiations with an undisclosed buyer who proposed acquiring it for NZ$1.20 ($1.12) per share, sidelining competitor Tyro Payments. Meanwhile, shares in Tyro Payments rose by 9%.
  • Reliance Worldwide experienced a 2.2% drop after forecasting that US tariffs could reduce its 2026 full-year earnings by $25 million ($38.7 million) to $35 million.
  • Oil prices dropped sharply, nearing a four-year low, following a surprise production boost by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, exacerbating fears of a global supply glut amid declining demand from ongoing trade tensions.
  • In international markets, Wall Street saw moderate gains: the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.39%, the S&P 500 increased 1.47%, and the NASDAQ gained 1.51%. 
  • The Hang Seng index climbed 1.74%, while the FTSE 100 advanced 1.17% today.
