Could Four Warning Signs Trigger a Deeper Global Bond Market Selloff as Treasury Yields Surge?

Could Four Warning Signs Trigger a Deeper Global Bond Market Selloff as Treasury Yields Surge? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • US Treasury yields reach multidecade highs, raising concerns over another wave of selling.
  • Rising hedging activity and AI-related borrowing reveal emerging pressures beneath bond markets.
  • A steepening yield curve signals growing uncertainty over America's long-term fiscal outlook.

US Bond Market Faces Mounting Pressure

The US bond market is showing signs of increasing instability as rising Treasury yields, expanding corporate borrowing and heightened investor caution threaten further volatility. the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reached approximately 5.23%, while the 30-year yield climbed to 5.60%, marking levels not witnessed in more than two decades.

Since the Iran conflict began in February, the 10-year yield has increased by approximately 135 basis points, intensifying concerns about financing costs and potential spillovers into global financial markets.

Four Indicators Signal Potential Market Stress

Several developments suggest that selling pressure could extend beyond conventional interest-rate expectations:

  • Interest-Rate Volatility: Growing demand for protection against higher yields has pushed certain hedging costs to their highest levels since the March 2023 banking turmoil.
  • Corporate Debt Expansion: Accelerating artificial intelligence infrastructure investment is increasing bond issuance, encouraging institutional investors to hedge their exposure through Treasury transactions.
  • Mortgage-Related Hedging: Rising interest rates are extending the expected duration of mortgage-backed securities, prompting additional hedging that could amplify Treasury selling.
  • Yield Curve Steepening: The difference between 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields widened to approximately 37 basis points, reflecting increased compensation demanded for longer-term risks.

AI Investment Adds Another Layer of Risk

Technology companies' substantial financing requirements are emerging as an important influence on fixed-income markets.

Goldman Sachs estimates that major hyperscale technology companies could issue approximately US$420 billion in debt during 2027.

Although corporate credit spreads remain relatively narrow, investors managing exposure to these securities may sell government bonds or Treasury futures, potentially reinforcing upward pressure on yields.

Outlook: Will Higher Yields Attract Buyers?

The coming months could prove significant for global bond markets as investors evaluate inflation, government borrowing requirements and institutional hedging activity.

Further increases in Treasury yields could raise corporate financing expenses, pressure equity valuations and complicate government debt management.

However, elevated yields may also attract long-term investors seeking competitive fixed-income returns, potentially moderating selling pressure.

Ultimately, market stability will depend on whether renewed investment demand can offset technical selling pressures and persistent fiscal uncertainty.
