Could Middle East Attacks Push Crude Oil Prices Higher as Global Supply Risks Intensify?

Could Middle East Attacks Push Crude Oil Prices Higher as Global Supply Risks Intensify? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Saudi airport and tanker attacks renew fears of disruptions to critical Middle Eastern oil supplies.
  • Brent crude remains above US$103, but escalating regional tensions could trigger further volatility.
  • Russian diesel developments and US emergency reserves introduce fresh uncertainty into global energy markets.

Middle East Conflict Heightens Oil Market Uncertainty

Global crude oil markets face renewed uncertainty as escalating hostilities across the Middle East raise concerns about potential supply disruptions. Attacks targeting Saudi Arabia's main airport and an oil tanker near Oman have intensified fears surrounding regional energy infrastructure and maritime trade.

Brent crude traded around US$103.60 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stood near US$90.74. Both benchmarks recorded declines of approximately 1.10% and 1.21%, respectively, suggesting that broader market pressures outweighed concerns over potential supply disruptions arising from geopolitical tensions.

Saudi Arabia and Oman Attacks Raise Supply Concerns

Recent developments have reinforced concerns over the security of critical energy transportation routes.

  • Saudi Airport Attack: Iran-backed Houthi militants reportedly targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh following an earlier strike that killed 12 people.
  • Tanker Incident: A drone reportedly struck a vessel near Oman's Sohar anchorage, raising concerns about maritime security.
  • Strait of Hormuz: Renewed attacks threaten confidence in shipping routes essential to international petroleum trade.

Although major regional producers have restored crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz toward pre-conflict levels, further attacks could undermine this recovery.

Russian Diesel Developments Add Market Complexity

Separately, US President Donald Trump indicated that Russia and Ukraine had reached an immediate energy ceasefire agreement. Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have disrupted processing operations, tightening international diesel availability.

Trump also discussed facilitating Russian diesel supplies to global markets, potentially easing fuel shortages. However, implementation uncertainties and geopolitical disagreements could complicate these efforts.

US Emergency Oil Measures Offer Temporary Relief

Meanwhile, Hurricane Isaias disrupted offshore energy operations across the US Gulf of Mexico, creating additional supply challenges. Washington authorised an emergency exchange of up to four million barrels from strategic petroleum reserves to support market availability. Such measures may cushion immediate shortages, although their effectiveness depends on the duration of production interruptions and shipping disruptions.

Crude Oil Outlook: Can Prices Sustain Their Momentum?

Goldman Sachs recently increased its December Brent forecast from US$85 to US$90 per barrel, reflecting heightened geopolitical risks.

Looking ahead, oil prices could remain volatile as investors assess Middle Eastern shipping security, Russian diesel supplies and US production recovery.

Further attacks on energy infrastructure could support higher prices, while improving diplomatic conditions and restored supply flows may ease upward pressure. The direction of crude markets will largely depend on whether geopolitical tensions translate into prolonged physical supply disruptions.
