Omega Oil & Gas Reports Best-Ever Canyon-4 Well Results, Boosting Resource Potential
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights
Canyon-4 intersected 589 metres of gross oil and gas-bearing formations, with 197 metres of aggregate net pay, exceeding results from previous Canyon wells.
Average porosity in the primary Canyon Sandstone target improved to 12.1%, compared with 7.4% at Canyon-1.
Omega is targeting an upgraded resource assessment in the first quarter of 2027, with horizontal flow testing planned for the first half of 2027.
Canyon-4 Delivers Strongest Results Across Omega's Drilling Campaign
Omega Oil & Gas Limited (ASX: OMA) announced on 12 October 2026 that its Canyon-4 appraisal well had delivered the strongest results among the Canyon wells drilled to date. The well forms part of the company's fully funded 2026/27 appraisal programme targeting oil and gas resources in Queensland's Taroom Trough.
Canyon-4 intersected a 589-metre gross oil and gas-bearing sequence containing 197 metres of aggregate net pay, measured as true vertical thickness. This surpassed Canyon-3, which recorded 526 metres of gross interval and 170 metres of net pay, and Canyon-1, which returned 433 metres and 132 metres, respectively. The well was drilled approximately eight kilometres south of Canyon-3 to evaluate reservoir continuity, quality and hydrocarbon distribution across Omega's wholly owned Canyon acreage.
Reservoir Quality Improves Across Multiple Targets
Omega reported improved reservoir characteristics in the primary Canyon Sandstone target, with average porosity increasing to 12.1% at Canyon-4 from 7.4% at Canyon-1. The well also intersected the Lower Kianga Formation and Tinowon Sandstone, adding to the geological information available across the eastern flank of the Taroom Trough.
The company recovered 111.2 metres of conventional core, achieving a 94.6% recovery rate across three key reservoir intervals. Gas measurements, petrophysical analysis, oil fluorescence and a petroleum-like odour provided encouraging indications of hydrocarbons throughout much of the reservoir sequence. Associated gas was also observed bubbling from the recovered core. However, Canyon-4 has not yet undergone production testing, so the results do not establish commercial flow rates.
Development Potential and Resource Assessment
Omega estimates that an approximately 400-square-kilometre area surrounding the Canyon wells could accommodate around 160 horizontal development well locations. This estimate is based on 2,000-metre horizontal well sections and spacing of approximately 2.5 square kilometres per well.
The company is integrating Canyon-4's core, wireline logging and geological data with existing seismic and drilling information to refine its reservoir model. Updated resource modelling will incorporate the latest appraisal results, with an upgraded assessment targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
Next Drilling Activities and Flow Testing
Omega's rig is moving to Canyon North-1 in ATP 2081, with Canyon North-2 also planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. The programme is expected to culminate in at least one, and potentially two, horizontal appraisal wells with lateral sections of up to 2,000 metres during the first half of 2027.
These wells are intended to assess reservoir performance and establish whether the identified formations can deliver commercial flow rates. Omega stated that its appraisal programme remains fully funded and within budget.
OMA Share Price Update
Omega Oil & Gas shares were quoted at AU$0.770, up AU$0.120 or 18.46%, based on the supplied market data. Investors may watch upcoming drilling results, the revised resource assessment and horizontal flow-testing outcomes for further indications of the project's commercial potential.
