Market Alert: Fed Cuts Rates by 25 bps, Signals More to Come

Markets Today (22 September 2025) at Open: Key Trends from Wall Street to ASX

Sep 22, 2025

Global Market Overview

Wall Street ended higher with the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq all closing at fresh all-time highs, driven by optimism around further Fed easing and strong economic momentum. The Nasdaq gained 0.72%, while the Russell 2000 pulled back 0.77% after a recent rally. Big tech names such as Oracle (+4.0%), Apple (+3.2%), and Tesla (+2.2%) led the advance. Market breadth remained weak, with equal-weight indices underperforming, showing concentration in large-cap tech leadership.

Commodities Update

Gold prices rose 1.1% overnight to US$3,684.75, supported by lower yields and safe-haven demand. This drove strong momentum in gold miners, with the Gold Miners ETF (GDX) up 5.1% to record highs. Uranium surged 8.1% as the URA ETF hit its highest level since 2012, boosted by Sprott Physical Uranium Trust buying ~450,000 pounds of uranium and Mercuria launching a new physical uranium trading desk. Copper advanced modestly (+0.26%) on steady industrial demand, while WTI crude oil rose 0.21% to US$62.68, helped by hedge fund buying amid geopolitical risks.

ASX Outlook

ASX 200 futures are pointing to a positive open, up 24 points (+0.27%) as of 8:30 am AEST. Local markets are expected to be led higher by gold and uranium stocks, reflecting overnight strength in global commodity markets. Gold miners are likely to see renewed buying after a brief pullback, while uranium names should benefit from strong international sentiment and increased physical demand.
