Chilwa Minerals Limited (ASX: CHW) has identified extensive rare earth element (REE) mineralisation in clay layers underlying its Mposa heavy mineral sands deposit in southern Malawi, highlighting a potential new growth opportunity within the project. Laboratory analysis of 200 clay samples produced an average total rare earth oxide (TREO) grade of 525 ppm, with numerous results exceeding 500 ppm and a peak value of 987 ppm across an approximately 8-kilometre mineralised trend. The clay-hosted mineralisation contains meaningful concentrations of high-value magnet rare earths, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, which are widely used in advanced technologies and clean energy applications. The next phase of work will involve metallurgical testing at ANSTO to determine whether the rare earths can be economically recovered using ionic adsorption clay processing methods. Successful test results could allow Chilwa Minerals to develop both heavy mineral sands and rare earth resources from the same project area, improving operational efficiency and strengthening the project's long-term commercial potential.
