Latrobe Magnesium Secures Key EPA Licence Extension, Ramps Up Operations

Latrobe Magnesium Limited (ASX: LMG) has secured a vital extension of its Pilot Project Licence from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria, now valid until February 2027. This milestone enables the company to move closer to full commissioning of its demonstration plant in Hazelwood North, Victoria, targeting the production of magnesium oxide (MgO) and valuable byproducts from coal ash. Operations are set to recommence on August 4, 2025, with initial outputs following staff training.

LMG’s patented extraction process is at the heart of the project, emphasizing sustainable recycling of brown coal waste. In parallel, the company plans a commercial plant capable of producing 10,000 tonnes of magnesium metal annually by 2027 and a 100,000-tonne international mega plant in Malaysia. By transforming industrial waste into valuable materials, LMG is aligning itself with ESG best practices and meeting growing demand in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics sectors.
