ASX 200 Ended Lower; Dragged Down By IT And Consumer Discretionary Sectors
By the end of the trading session on 22 June 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.23% and settled at 6,508.50. Out of 11 sectors, 6 sectors closed lower along with the gain in the ASX 200.
The Utilities and Energy were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 2.05% and 1.52% in their index values. On the other hand, the Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top 2 losing sectors, declined 1.52% and 1.36% in their index values.
Iress Limited (ASX: IRE) and APA Group (ASX: APA) were the top gainers with 4.510% and 4.201% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, St Barbara Limited (ASX: SBM) and Zip Co Limited (ASX: ZIP) were the top losers, with an 18.142% and 11.429% drop in share prices respectively.
UK inflation rose to a new 40-year high in May after broad increases in the cost of everything from fuel and electricity to food and beverages.
Zip closed down by 11.42% to AU $0.465 despite releasing an announcement in the afternoon reassuring shareholders that it is well placed to respond to and offset rising interest rates.
The rally in the US market came even after Goldman Sachs lifted its probability of the US entering a recession over the next year to 30% from 15%, in line with the Federal Reserve's decision to raise rates fast.
St Barbara's share price dropped sharply after announcing a strategic review about whether to proceed with a project to extend the life of its Simberi mine in Papua New Guinea.
Dow has closed up by 2.2%, S&P 500 up by 2.5%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 2.5%.
Hang Seng is down by 1.90%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.42%.
