Can Gold Prices Sustain Their Recovery Above US$4,000 After AI Selloff Ahead of Fed Decision?

Can Gold Prices Sustain Their Recovery Above US$4,000 After AI Selloff Ahead of Fed Decision? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Gold rebounds above US$4,000, but uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve could challenge further gains.
  • AI-driven equity losses trigger unexpected gold selling, raising questions about traditional safe-haven demand.
  • Falling oil prices ease inflation concerns as investors await crucial monetary policy signals.

Gold Prices Recover from Three-Month Lows

Gold prices edged higher, recovering from recent losses as investors assessed softer oil prices and awaited the US Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision. The precious metal traded near US$4,000 per ounce after falling to approximately US$3,975 on Friday, its lowest level in more than three months.

Latest market data showed gold at US$4,012.24 per ounce, gaining US$18.28, or 0.46%. However, prices remained 2.48% lower over the month, reflecting persistent pressure from monetary policy uncertainty and financial market volatility.

AI-Driven Equity Selloff Pressures Gold

Gold's recent weakness followed a sharp downturn in technology shares as investors questioned the sustainability of substantial artificial intelligence investments. Selling pressure across AI-related companies encouraged a shift towards US Treasury bonds, while some investors liquidated gold holdings to meet funding requirements and offset equity market losses.

Consequently, bullion declined more than 4% during the previous week, marking its steepest weekly fall since June.

The development highlighted an unusual market response, with gold weakening despite heightened financial uncertainty. Although traditionally considered a defensive asset, the metal faced selling pressure as investors prioritised liquidity and government bonds.

Falling Oil Prices Ease Inflation Concerns

Gold received additional support as crude oil retreated from recent six-month highs amid expectations of potential diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran. Lower energy prices could reduce inflationary pressures, potentially limiting the need for additional monetary tightening. Nevertheless, ongoing Middle East supply risks continue to influence inflation expectations and commodity market sentiment.

Federal Reserve Policy Outlook Draws Investor Attention

Gold market participants are closely assessing key monetary policy developments that could influence the precious metal's short-term price direction.

  • Federal Reserve Decision: Market expectations indicate that the US central bank will maintain its current interest rate settings when it announces its policy decision on 28 October.
  • US Inflation Data: Thursday's Personal Consumption Expenditures report could influence expectations for future borrowing costs.
  • December Interest Rate Outlook: Investors remain focused on whether the Federal Reserve will introduce another rate hike before the end of the year.

Higher interest rates generally reduce gold's relative attractiveness because the metal offers no interest income.

Outlook: Can Gold Sustain Its Recovery?

Gold's near-term direction will likely depend on Federal Reserve guidance, US inflation figures and developments across global equity markets. Although easing oil prices and a softer dollar have provided support, renewed selling in technology stocks or unexpectedly restrictive monetary policy signals could undermine the recovery. Sustained trading above US$4,000 may improve market confidence, while further volatility could leave bullion vulnerable to renewed downward pressure.
