Could Another RBA Interest Rate Hike Follow Sarah Hunter’s Warning on Persistent Inflation?

Could Another RBA Interest Rate Hike Follow Sarah Hunter’s Warning on Persistent Inflation? Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • RBA economist Sarah Hunter signals inflation remains a concern despite four interest rate increases.
  • November's policy meeting could bring another rate hike as inflation pressures persist.
  • Australian households face renewed borrowing cost uncertainty as policymakers assess economic conditions.

RBA Signals Further Inflation Battle

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has indicated that its efforts to control inflation may require further action, raising expectations of another interest rate increase. RBA Chief Economist Sarah Hunter warned that inflation remains uncomfortably high despite four rate hikes, suggesting monetary policy may need to stay restrictive for longer. Her comments have renewed attention on the central bank's November policy meeting, with households, businesses and financial markets assessing the possibility of additional tightening.

Persistent Inflation Complicates Rate Outlook

Australia's inflation outlook remains challenging as policymakers seek to bring consumer price growth sustainably towards the RBA's 2–3% target range. Although previous rate increases have aimed to contain spending and price pressures, officials remain concerned that inflation could prove more persistent than anticipated.

The RBA must balance two competing priorities:

  • Inflation Control: Preventing persistent price increases from becoming embedded in the economy.
  • Economic Stability: Avoiding excessive pressure on household consumption, employment and business investment.
  • Policy Expectations: Assessing whether incoming economic data justify another increase in borrowing costs.

Rising Oil Prices Add Inflation Pressure

Higher energy costs linked to the US-Iran conflict have introduced additional challenges. Hunter highlighted how rising fuel and transportation expenses are gradually spreading through supply chains, potentially increasing construction and other business costs.

Meanwhile, RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser recently warned that inflation conditions had deteriorated compared with the central bank's August assessment.

November Rate Decision in Focus

The RBA's cash rate currently stands at 4.60%, following September's increase. Markets are watching the upcoming quarterly inflation figures, scheduled for 28 October, before the central bank announces its next decision on 3 November.

Outlook: Further Tightening Remains Possible

Another rate increase could place additional pressure on mortgage repayments, consumer spending and interest-rate-sensitive sectors. However, easing energy prices or softer inflation data could reduce the urgency for further tightening.

The November decision will depend on whether incoming economic indicators demonstrate sufficient progress towards sustainable price stability. Hunter's remarks reinforce the possibility of another increase, although policymakers have not committed to a specific outcome.
