SkyCity Targets Savings and Asset Sales After FY26 Profit Decline
Source: Kapitales Research
Highlights
Lower earnings increase pressure on SkyCity to deliver its restructuring plans.
Property sales could strengthen finances, although a major transaction remains conditional.
FY27 savings provide potential support as subdued trading challenges recovery.
Annual Results Reveal Earnings Pressure
SkyCity Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SKC) announced its annual results on 20 August 2026, reporting reduced profitability as softer consumer spending and operational changes affected its casinos. The company outlined plans to lower expenses, sell assets and reduce borrowing while adapting to changes in the gambling market.
Revenue decreased 0.3% to NZ$822.7 million. Underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped 22.3% to NZ$181.6 million, within management’s May guidance of NZ$180–190 million.
Underlying net profit declined 46.9% to NZ$38.0 million, while reported net profit fell 37.6% to NZ$18.2 million. The results showed that relatively stable underlying revenue did not prevent a substantial contraction in earnings.
Weaker Casino Activity Weighs on Performance
The introduction of carded play, together with lower customer visitation and spending in Auckland and Adelaide during the fourth quarter, weighed on gaming revenue.
Non-gaming activities provided a partial offset. The New Zealand International Convention Centre opened in February and hosted 141 events during FY26, contributing additional revenue.
SkyCity also completed its carded-play rollout across New Zealand casinos, improving oversight of individual customer activity and strengthening responsible gambling capabilities.
Restructuring and Disposals Support Debt Strategy
Management’s main priorities include:
Achieving cost benefits of NZ$30 million in FY27 and NZ$70 million in FY28.
Raising expected gross proceeds of NZ$275–300 million from asset disposals.
Reviewing Adelaide’s strategic direction following regulatory and operational changes.
The operating-model overhaul could affect 200–250 predominantly New Zealand corporate and support positions.
Net debt reached NZ$591 million at year-end. SkyCity intends to direct disposal proceeds towards repayments. Its goal of bringing debt-to-EBITDA below two times by the end of FY27 remains conditional on completing The Grand Hotel sale and excludes online licence payments.
Outlook
SkyCity withheld FY27 earnings guidance because of economic uncertainty. Early first-quarter trading continued the weaker fourth-quarter earnings trend, indicating that recovery remained challenging.
Planned savings could support profitability, although increased online gambling expenditure will partly offset those benefits. Restructuring charges will also affect reported earnings.
Future progress depends on completing asset sales, controlling costs and stabilising customer spending. Management aims to restore positive cash flow before reinstating dividends.
