CLINUVEL Pharmaceuticals Limited gained 0.68%, closing at AU$10.340, up AU$0.070.
Health Canada has authorised the commercial use of SCENESSE® for adults diagnosed with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).
The approval expands CLINUVEL’s commercial footprint and strengthens its position in the global rare disease market.
Shares of CLINUVEL Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CUV) traded modestly higher after the company announced a significant regulatory milestone in North America. The specialty pharmaceutical group revealed that Health Canada has granted a Notice of Compliance (NOC) for SCENESSE® (afamelanotide), allowing the therapy to be marketed for the prevention of phototoxicity in adults suffering from erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare inherited metabolic disorder.
Canadian Approval Marks Key Expansion
The latest approval adds Canada to the list of countries where SCENESSE® has secured full regulatory authorisation. The therapy had previously received approvals in Europe (2014), the United States (2019), and Australia (2020), further strengthening CLINUVEL’s global commercial presence. The company noted that five accredited treatment centres are already operational in Canada, where eligible patients have previously accessed the therapy through special access programs.
Long-Term Clinical Evidence Supports Approval
According to CLINUVEL, Health Canada's decision was supported by extensive clinical and post-marketing data demonstrating the treatment's long-term safety and therapeutic benefits. SCENESSE® is designed to stimulate melanin production, providing a protective barrier against harmful light exposure while also delivering antioxidant effects. More than 21,000 doses have been administered globally, with some patients receiving continuous treatment for up to 20 years, reinforcing confidence in the therapy's long-term safety profile.
Growth Opportunity in Rare Disease Treatment
EPP affects an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 people worldwide, including approximately one in 140,000 individuals in Canada. By expanding access to SCENESSE®, CLINUVEL is positioned to reach additional patients while reinforcing its leadership in photomedicine and therapies targeting rare disorders. The Canadian approval also supports the company's broader commercial strategy of expanding market access across regulated healthcare systems.
Investor Outlook
While the immediate financial impact remains to be seen, regulatory approvals often serve as important catalysts for specialty pharmaceutical companies. The latest milestone enhances CLINUVEL's international growth prospects and reflects continued progress in commercialising innovative therapies for underserved patient populations.Note- All data presented is based on information available at the time of writing.Disclaimer for Kapitales ResearchThe materials provided by Kapitales Research, including articles, news, data, reports, opinions, images, charts, and videos ("Content"), are intended for personal, non-commercial use only.
