Austal Faces US Provision Hit as Hanwha Eyes Austal USA

Austal Limited (ASX: ASB) expects its Australasia business to deliver FY2026 EBIT of approximately AU$62 million, supported by strong profit growth, cash generation and a substantial defence shipbuilding pipeline. However, Austal USA expects an EBIT loss of approximately AU$175 million following non-cash provisions related to legacy contracts after accelerated contractual relief was not secured. Consequently, Group FY2026 EBIT is expected to record a loss of approximately AU$113 million.

Meanwhile, Hanwha Defence USA submitted a non-binding conditional proposal to acquire Austal USA at an indicative enterprise value of US$1.05–1.20 billion. The proposal excludes Austal’s Australasian operations and publicly traded shares, preserving its sovereign Australian shipbuilding platform. The Board has allowed Hanwha to undertake due diligence, although completion remains uncertain. Austal also maintains strong liquidity, supported by a AU$240 million net cash position and AU$435 million of undrawn debt facilities.
