By the end of the trading session on 23 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.15% and settled at 8,360.90. Out of the 11 sectors, 06 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Information Technology and Energy is the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.13% and 1.04% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Utilities and Materials are the top-losing sector, losing 0.97% and 0.65% in their index value.

Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) and Deep Yellow Limited (ASX: DYL) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 12.112% and 8.260% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) and Clarity Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CU6) are the top-losing stocks, losing 6.084% and 3.931% in their stock prices.

  • Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) shares declined by 6.3% after analysts at Morgan Stanley expressed diminished confidence in the stock following a recent trading update that raised concerns.
  • Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) slipped 1% after it announced that its second-half earnings from its minority stake in Australia Pacific LNG would fall $55 million short of earlier expectations.
  • Duratec Limited (ASX: DUR), a construction services firm, dropped 4.8% after revising its full-year revenue forecast downwards to between $570 million and $585 million. The revision was attributed to delays in project awards and adverse weather conditions.
  • Gold prices remained stable after recording their first dip of the week, as some investors redirected interest toward US Treasury bonds and a strengthening US dollar.
  • Crude oil prices dropped to their lowest closing level in nearly two weeks. The decline was driven by a rise in US oil inventories and discussions among OPEC+ members about a potential increase in supply, amid weakening global demand influenced by the ongoing US-led trade tensions.
  • In international markets, Wall Street ended marginally down. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remained unchanged, the S&P 500 eased by 0.04%, while the NASDAQ Composite edged up 0.28%.
  • Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose by 0.10%, whereas the UK’s FTSE 100 fell by 0.54%.
