ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.25%, Lifted by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 20 August 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.25% and settled at 8,918.00. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary are the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.93% and 1.64% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Materials and Information Technology was the top-losing sector, losing 2.43% and 1.07% in it’s value.

HMC Capital Limited (ASX: HMC) and Centuria Capital Group (ASX: CNI) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 17.125% and 9.302% in their stock prices. On the other hand, James Hardie Industries PLC (ASX: JHX) and Yancoal Australia Limited (ASX: YAL) are the top-losing stocks, losing 28.237% and 11.013% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The Lottery Corporation jumped 7% to $5.66 after surpassing market expectations, even though net profit fell 12% to $365.5 million.
  • HMC Capital surged 17.7% to $3.85, rebounding strongly from Tuesday’s sharp decline, as investors returned to the stock following a “buy” upgrade from broker Morgans.
  • Stockland Group advanced 7% to $6.12, supported by robust fourth-quarter residential sales and a lower-than-expected payout ratio, which helped it edge past forecasts.
  • Magellan Financial inched up 1.6% to $10.78, despite reporting a 31% drop in full-year net profit to $165 million. The fund manager announced that it would return profits from its holdings in investment bank Barrenjoey and hedge fund Vinva to shareholders through higher dividends.
  • Brent crude was trading at about US$65.87 a barrel at 12pm, marking its lowest level since late May.
  • On global markets, Wall Street closed mixed: the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.02%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.59%, and the NASDAQ Composite fell 1.46%. 
  • In Asia and Europe, the Hang Seng rose 0.21%, while the FTSE 100 edged down 0.16%
