Market Alert: S&P/ASX 200 Nearing All - Time High – Tactical Positioning Advised Amid Geopolitical Tensions

ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.56%, Lifted by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 27 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.56% and settled at 8,407.60. Out of the 11 sectors, 07 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Information Technology and Financial is the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.18% and 1.06% in their it’s value. On the other hand,  A-REIT and Materials are the top-losing sector, losing 0.50% and 0.31% in their index value.

Capstone Copper Corp. (ASX: CSC) and Lovisha Holdings Limited (ASX: LOV) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 6.590% and 3.970% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) and Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) are the top-losing stocks, losing 7.330% and 4.400% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • REA Group Ltd (ASX: REA) slipped 3.5% to $242.18 at the time of writing, following reports that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating whether the News Corp-backed property listings platform has exploited its market position to impose excessive price hikes.
  • Capstone Copper Corp (TSE: CS) gained 6.8% to $8.43, and Sandfire Resources Ltd (ASX: SFR) advanced 3.1% to $11.36, buoyed by stronger copper prices. London copper futures rose 1.2% to US$9,610 per tonne, lifting investor sentiment.
  • Nufarm Ltd (ASX: NUF) declined another 5.6% to $2.36, hitting a record low. The agricultural chemicals company had already plunged over 30% last week after slashing its earnings forecast due to a downturn in fish oil prices.
  • Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) eased 1.6% to $81.38 as the stock traded ex-dividend.
  • In commodities, oil prices remained volatile as markets digested improving trade sentiment against concerns over increasing output from OPEC+ members.
  • On global indices, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.61%, the S&P 500 declined 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite dropped 1.00%. 
  • Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index edged up 0.27%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 dipped 0.24%.
