By the end of the trading session on 15 August 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.73% and settled at 8,938.60. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Materials are the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.14% and 1.14% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Information Technology and Consumer Staples was the top-losing sector, losing 0.16% and 0.01% in it’s value.

Ampol Limited (ASX: ALD) and IDP Education Limited (ASX: IEL) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.683% and 5.787% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Temple & Webster Group Limited (ASX: TPW) and Amcor PLC (ASX: AMC) are the top-losing stocks, losing 11.711% and 9.695% in their stock prices.

  • Ampol climbed 7.7% to $29.15, supported by broad energy sector gains, and rallied 7.3% following its $1.1 billion acquisition agreement for EG Australia.
  • Amcor dropped 9.7% to $13.60 as softer sales volumes in North America weighed on its performance, with full-year earnings coming in slightly below expectations.
  • Mirvac eased 0.9% after reporting a turnaround to a $68 million net profit for security holders in the year to June, compared with an $805 million loss previously, despite a 10% drop in revenue to $2.74 billion.
  • Cochlear gained 1% as its annual profit landed at the lower end of the recently revised $392 million range.
  • Oil prices held steady during Asian trading on Friday after sharp gains the day before, with attention on an upcoming U.S.–Russia meeting and its potential impact on global supply.
  • On Wall Street, U.S. stocks ended mixed — the Dow Jones rose 1.04%, the S&P 500 gained 0.32%, and the NASDAQ Composite inched up 0.14%. 
  • In other markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 1.04%, while the FTSE 100 edged 0.13% higher.
