By the end of the trading session on 04 June 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.89% and settled at 8,541.80. Out of the 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Consumer Discretionary is the top-gaining sector, gaining 2.26% and 1.39% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Consumer Staples and Telecommunications Services are the top-losing sector, losing 0.27% and 0.18% in their index value.

Zip Co Limited (ASX: ZIP) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 13.624% and 9.813% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) and Brickworks Limited (ASX: BKW) are the top-losing stocks, losing 4.889% and 4.412% in their stock prices.

  • Mayne Pharma Group Limited experienced a 5.3% decline to $4.48 after US-based pharmaceutical company Cosette announced plans to withdraw its $672 million acquisition offer for the Adelaide-headquartered drugmaker.
  • IDP Education Limited fell 2.6% to $3.78, extending losses from the previous session, during which the stock plunged nearly 50%.
  • Meanwhile, Japanese media and entertainment company Mixi Inc. has submitted an increased bid to acquire PointsBet, aiming to outmaneuver rival Australian betting firm Betr. This development pushed PointsBet shares up 10.6% to $1.20, while Betr’s stock dipped 1.4% to 35 cents.
  • Gold prices recovered modestly following a decline in the prior session, lifted by renewed buying from Asian investors amid rising concerns over trade tensions linked to former US President Donald Trump’s tariff measures.
  • Australia’s economy grew 0.2% in the March quarter, easing from 0.6% growth in the previous quarter and falling short of economists’ expectations for a 0.4% rise. On an annual basis, the country’s GDP growth remained subdued at 1.3%.
  • Global equity markets posted mixed performances. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.51%, the S&P 500 advanced 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite climbed 0.81%. 
  • In other regions, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index increased by 0.39%, while London’s FTSE 100 edged up 0.15%.
