ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.12%, Dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 18 June 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.12% and settled at 8,531.20. Out of the 11 sectors, 03 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Information Technology and Healthcare is the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.09% and 0.71% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Materials and Utilities are the top-losing sector, losing 1.56% and 0.98% in their index value.

Viva Energy Group Limited (ASX: VEA) and Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.339% and 4.250% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Lovisha Holdings Limited (ASX: LOV) and Spartan Resources Limited (ASX: SPR) are the top-losing stocks, losing 5.269% and 4.630% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Data centre operator NextDC Limited (ASX: NXT) initially dropped 1% during early trading but recovered in the afternoon to close 0.2% higher at $14.01. This came as the company secured a $2.2 billion bank facility aimed at refinancing its existing debt.
  • Ooh!Media Limited (ASX: OML) saw its share price climb 3.6% to $1.74 after UBS upgraded the stock to a "buy" rating, setting a price target of $2 — suggesting close to 20% upside potential.
  • Meanwhile, Cettire Limited (ASX: CTT) rebounded 10.5% to 32¢ after falling from 47¢ the previous week. Despite the recovery, Atlas Funds Management’s Hugh Dive cautioned retail investors against chasing the dip.
  • In macro news, China has announced it will allow select local investors to increase their exposure to overseas assets. This move hints at a gradual liberalisation of its financial markets, coinciding with a stabilising yuan.
  • Crude oil prices surged after reaching their highest levels in nearly five months, driven by market speculation that the United States could soon support Israel in its ongoing conflict with Iran — a sentiment fuelled by comments from former President Donald Trump.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.70%, the S&P 500 lost 0.84%, and the NASDAQ Composite declined 0.91%.
  • However, in Asia, the Hang Seng Index slipped 1.28% during today’s session.
