ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.16%, Dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 07 July 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.16% and settled at 8,589.30. Out of the 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Utilities and Healthcare is the top-gaining sector, gaining 3.52% and 0.92% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Materials and Consumer Discretionary are the top-losing sector, losing 0.86% and 0.75% in their index value.

Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) and Helia Group Limited (ASX: HLI) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 6.746% and 3.289% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Northern Star Resources Limited (ASX: NST) and Clarity Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CU6) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.646% and 6.463% in their stock prices.

  • Origin Energy (ASX: ORG) surged 6.8% to $11.55 following reports that UK-based Octopus Energy, in which it holds a 23% stake, may spin off its technology platform, Kraken.
  • Shares of Mineral Resources (ASX: MIN) opened higher but ended the session 2% lower at $24.46, after the company announced the appointments of Lawrie Tremaine and Ross Carroll as independent non-executive directors.
  • HUB24 (ASX: HUB) gained 2.8% to $94.30, driven by a UBS rating upgrade to “buy” and a revised price target of $105.
  • Nanosonics (ASX: NAN) advanced 1.6% to $3.91 following news that its Trophon device, which sterilises ultrasound probes, received an upgrade in both the UK and European markets.
  • Gold prices eased slightly after a near 2% gain last week, as investors awaited progress in US trade discussions ahead of the July 9 tariff deadline set by President Donald Trump.
  • Oil prices declined by 1% in early Monday trading amid concerns of oversupply after OPEC+ announced an acceleration in production increases.
  • The Dow Jones slipped 0.77%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.83% and the NASDAQ rose 1.02%. 
  • In Asia, the Hang Seng declined 0.40%, and in Europe, the FTSE 100 edged down 0.10%.
