ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.45%, Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 22 May 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.45% and settled at 8,348.70. Out of the 11 sectors, 10 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Materials is the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.60% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Information Technology and Energy are the top-losing sector, losing 1.64% and 1.39% in their index value.

Lynas Rare Earths Limited (ASX: LYC) and Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 6.973% and 5.783% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Zip Co. Limited (ASX: ZIP) and Nufarm Limited (ASX: NUF) are the top-losing stocks, losing 6.500% and 6.406% in their stock prices.

  • Insurance Australia Group Ltd (ASX: IAG) rose by 2.7% to $8.75 at the time of writing, following the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) approval of its proposed acquisition of RACQ Insurance.
  • Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (ASX: LYC) surged 7% to $8.13, buoyed by a double upgrade from Morgan Stanley, which forecasted that Lynas could be among the key critical minerals suppliers set to benefit from rising demand for AI-powered humanoid robots.
  • Zip Co Ltd (ASX: ZIP) tumbled 6.5% to $1.87 after Sweden-based Klarna issued a warning that more users were experiencing difficulty repaying their ‘buy now, pay later’ loans, casting a shadow over the sector.
  • Mayne Pharma Group Ltd (ASX: MYX) declined 4.4% to $4.35, extending its losses from the previous day’s 30% plunge. The fall followed ASX’s inquiry into why the company hadn’t disclosed a reprimand from US regulators.
  • Oil prices fluctuated following a CNN report suggesting that Israel may be preparing to target Iran's nuclear sites, while traders also weighed the impact of rising crude inventories in the United States.
  • In the US, equity markets closed slightly lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 1.91%, the S&P 500 declined 1.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite fell 1.41%.
  • As of the time of writing, the Hang Seng Index is down 1.06%, whereas the FTSE 100 is showing a modest gain of 0.06%.
