ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.60%, Dragged down by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 13 August 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.60% and settled at 8,827.10. Out of 11 sectors, 05 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Materials and Healthcare are the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.97% and 0.95% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Utilities and Financial was the top-losing sector, losing 2.77% and 2.60% in it’s value.

Alcoa Corporation (ASX: AAI) and Qantas Airways Limited (ASX: QAN) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.023% and 5.636% in their stock prices. On the other hand, AGL Energy Limited (ASX: AGL) and Beach Energy Limited (ASX: BPT) are the top-losing stocks, losing 13.112% and 7.548% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The utilities sector was the weakest performer of the day, weighed down by a 13.1% slide in AGL Energy’s share price to $8.88 after the company reported a 21.2% drop in full-year core profit, driven by lower wholesale electricity prices and tighter retail margins.
  • Treasury Wine Estates rose 1.2% to $7.72 after the Penfolds owner increased its final dividend to 20 cents per share, up from 19 cents last year, and unveiled plans for a share buyback of up to $200 million.
  • Insurance Australia Group gave up earlier strong gains to close 0.1% lower at $8.49, despite reporting a 51% lift in full-year net profit to $1.4 billion.
  • Tyro Payments surged 11.5% to $1.19 after confirming it had received acquisition interest from multiple parties. The stock was placed in a trading halt on Tuesday after jumping more than 10% in early trade.
  • In commodities news, US oil production is now forecast to decline in 2026 as falling prices reduce drilling activity, according to a government report. This marks a reversal from years of steady growth that made the US the world’s largest producer.
  • US equities ended mixed, with the Dow Jones up 1.10%, the S&P 500 gaining 1.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite advancing 1.39%. 
  • In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 2.33% today.
