ASX/200 Closer Higher by 0.90%, Lifted by Industrials

By the end of the trading session on 17 July 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.90% and settled at 8,639.00. All 11 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Industrials and Utilities are the top-gaining sector, gaining 1.18% and 1.09% in their it’s value.

Block, Inc. (ASX: XYZ) and Auckland International Airport Limited (ASX: AIA) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.058% and 4.719% in their stock prices. On the other hand, West African Resources Limited (ASX: WAF) and Lifestyle Communities Limited (ASX: LIC) are the top-losing stocks, losing 3.464% and 3.257% in their stock prices.

  • Car Group Limited (ASX: CAR) dropped 2.9% to $36.35 after announcing that CFO William Elliott will replace long-time CEO Cameron McIntyre next month. The company also projected net income between $273 million and $277 million for FY25.
  • PointsBet Holdings (ASX: PBH) remained steady at $1.19, following news of an unsolicited all-scrip takeover bid from ASX-listed Betr Entertainment at $1.03 per share.
  • Alcoa Corporation (ASX: AAI) rose 1.7% to $44.54, despite revealing that it faced approximately US$115 million (A$176.6 million) in second-quarter tariff expenses on Canadian aluminium shipped to the US.
  • UBS has maintained its forecast that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will lower the cash rate by 25 basis points in both August and November, taking the rate to 3.35% by the end of 2025.
  • The Australian dollar slipped 0.5% to US64.93¢ at 11:35am AEST, while the ASX 200 climbed 0.7% to 8618.4, boosted by investor hopes of rate cuts following a surprise rise in unemployment to 4.3%.
  • Crude oil prices declined for the third straight day, pressured by worries about a potential oversupply later this year, despite a larger-than-anticipated drop in US crude stockpiles.
  • In global market updates: Dow Jones rose 0.53%, S&P 500 increased 0.32% and NASDAQ Composite edged up 0.25%
  • Hang Seng gained 0.17% and FTSE 100 dipped 0.13%
