ASX/200 Closer Lower by 0.14%, Dragged down by Healthcare

By the end of the trading session on 07 August 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.14% and settled at 8,831.40. Out of 11 sectors, 05 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology are the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.89% and 0.40% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Healthcare and Industrials was the top-losing sector, losing 1.16% and 0.94% in it’s value.

Westgold Resources Limited (ASX: WGX) and AMP Limited (ASX: AMP) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.072% and 4.790% in their stock prices. On the other hand, ASX Limited (ASX: ASX) and Clarity Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX: CU6) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.623% and 6.009% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The ASX plunged 8.6% to $64.22, marking its sharpest single-day decline since June 2023, when the stock dropped by 10%. The sell-off followed comments from Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who signalled plans to dismantle the company’s monopoly. 
  • In other corporate updates, AMP Limited (ASX: AMP) climbed 4.8% to $1.75 following the release of its half-year earnings. Although the results fell short of analysts’ expectations, UBS remained optimistic, projecting a stronger performance in the second half, supported by improved margins at AMP Bank.
  • Meanwhile, Neuren Pharmaceuticals (ASX: NEU) advanced 3.2% to $17.55 after its U.S. partner, Acadia Pharmaceuticals, reported solid second-quarter results for their Rett syndrome therapy, DAYBUE.
  • In commodities, oil prices extended their decline overnight, as markets balanced concerns over escalating geopolitical risks with encouraging data from a U.S. crude inventory report.
  • On Wall Street, U.S. equities ended with mixed movements. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.18%, the S&P 500 rose 0.73%, and the NASDAQ Composite led gains with a 1.21% increase.
  • In Asian markets, the Hang Seng Index opened higher, posting a 0.71% gain during early trade today.
