By the end of the trading session on 17 April 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.04% and settled at 7,758.90. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200. Energy and Materials are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 3.82% and 1.45% in their index values. Meanwhile, Healthcare is the top-losing sector, losing 0.13% in their index values. Clarity Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: CU6) and Challenger Limited (ASX: CGF) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 13.095% and 10.210% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Zip Co. Limited (ASX: ZIP) and Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited (ASX: DMP) are the top-losing stocks, losing 3.489% and 2.429% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Challenger Limited (ASX: CGF) surged 10.2% to $6.80 after it revised its FY25 normalised net profit forecast to a tighter range of $450 million to $465 million, as outlined in its third-quarter trading update.
  • AMP Limited (ASX: AMP) rose 3.2% to $1.145, supported by a quarterly update that showed its platforms division recorded net cash inflows of $740 million.
  • BHP Group Limited (ASX: BHP) reported lower-than-expected iron ore shipments from its Australian operations over the past quarter. Nevertheless, the volume still outperformed results from two of the last four years, despite milder weather conditions during those periods. Shares advanced 1.1% to $36.48 at the time of writing.
  • Insignia Financial Limited (ASX: IFL) gained 3.3% to close at $3.72 after it extended the due diligence period for potential acquirers Bain Capital and CC Capital by four weeks, responding to a request from the suitors.
  • Crude oil prices continued to rise for a second consecutive session, following the United States’ announcement of plans to eliminate Iranian energy exports.
  • On the global front, US equity markets ended with modest losses overnight— the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.73%, the S&P 500 shed 2.24%, and the NASDAQ dropped 3.07%.
  • Meanwhile, Asian and European indices posted gains, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index up 1.35% and the UK’s FTSE 100 rising 0.32% at the time of writing.
