Highlights

  • Ownership of the Sierra Atacama copper project rises to 62.86% following the exercise of a control call option.
  • Approximately US$12 million in cash consideration is payable to Minera Salar Blanco SpA for the acquisition.
  • Majority ownership and board representation strengthen Cobre's control over planned mine expansion and exploration activities.

Cobre Limited Secures Majority Control of Sierra Atacama

Cobre Limited (ASX: CBE) announced on 12 October 2026 that its wholly owned Chilean subsidiary, Sierra Cobre SpA, had exercised a control call option to increase its interest in the Sierra Atacama copper project to 62.86%. The transaction consolidates Cobre's position as the majority shareholder and gives it greater authority over the project's future development. Under the terms of the amended Investment Agreement dated 30 June 2026, Cobre Chile will pay approximately US$12 million to Minera Salar Blanco SpA (MSB) to acquire the relevant shares. TThe acquisition further strengthens the company's ownership position in the copper project. Cobre stated that the increased interest provides stronger economic participation in the project, allowing a greater share of future production to accrue to its shareholders.

Board Representation Strengthens Governance Control

Alongside the increase in ownership, Cobre Chile is entitled to appoint an additional director to the boards of the relevant project companies. This will increase its representation to three of the five directors, aligning board control with its majority shareholding.

The enhanced governance position is expected to support decision-making as Sierra Atacama moves into its next development phase. Cobre intends to use its controlling interest to progress expansion plans, improve operational performance and broaden exploration activities.

Executive Chairman Martin Holland said the transaction places the company in a stronger position to advance the project's development while benefiting from favourable copper market fundamentals.

Mine Expansion and Exploration Plans Advance

Cobre identified several priorities for Sierra Atacama's next growth phase, including the previously announced processing plant expansion, development of satellite open pits and an expanded exploration programme.

These initiatives are intended to support the project's production growth and help unlock additional value from the asset. However, the announcement did not provide a revised production target, a detailed expansion timetable or updated project cost estimates. Cobre and MSB will continue working together to advance the project's potential following the ownership consolidation.

Copper Market Outlook and Strategic Positioning

The company described Sierra Atacama as a producing copper operation with opportunities for further growth. Its increased ownership comes as Cobre seeks to strengthen its position in the copper sector through greater operational and governance control.

Future progress will depend on the execution of expansion plans, exploration results, operating performance and broader market conditions. Cobre also cautioned that forward-looking expectations remain subject to commercial, operational, market and counterparty risks.

CBE Share Price Update

Cobre Limited shares were quoted at AU$0.332, up AU$0.017 or 5.56%, based on the supplied market data. Investors may monitor developments in plant expansion, satellite pit development and exploration as indicators of the project's next phase.
