Gold Prices Surge as US Treasury Yields Retreat, Lifting Five Major ASX Gold Stocks

Gold Prices Surge as US Treasury Yields Retreat, Lifting Five Major ASX Gold Stocks Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Gold approaches US$4,200 as easing Treasury yields revive investor interest in precious metals.
  • Declining crude prices offer relief from inflationary pressures, while unresolved US-Iran tensions continue to cloud the outlook.
  • Five major ASX gold stocks advance, with Genesis Minerals leading the gains.

Gold Prices Climb as Bond Yields Ease

Gold prices strengthened on Friday, 9 October 2026, supported by declining US Treasury yields, softer oil prices and renewed demand for precious metals. The precious metal climbed 1.25%, or US$51.74, to US$4,184.86 per ounce, extending its recovery for a second consecutive session. Despite the latest gains, gold remained down 3.10% over the past month, although its yearly performance showed an increase of 4.25%.

The rebound followed strong investor demand at a US 30-year Treasury bond auction, which helped bring long-term yields down from multi-decade highs. Declining bond yields tend to strengthen demand for gold, as lower returns on interest-bearing investments make the precious metal more attractive to investors.

Oil Prices Retreat Amid US-Iran Developments

Energy markets also contributed to improving sentiment after US President Donald Trump indicated that discussions with Iran were progressing constructively and suggested Washington would refrain from military action before the November midterm elections.

Oil prices subsequently declined, with Brent crude falling 1.41% to US$102.80 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped 1.32% to US$90.28 per barrel.

A sustained decline in energy costs may help ease inflation, potentially lowering the likelihood of further aggressive interest rate increases. However, continuing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to oil shipments remain important uncertainties.

Federal Reserve Outlook Remains Critical

Investors are closely monitoring the Federal Reserve's next policy decisions as inflation concerns compete with signs of easing financial-market pressures. Market expectations indicated an approximately 82% probability of unchanged interest rates in October, alongside an estimated 81% likelihood of a December rate increase.

Consequently, upcoming inflation releases, employment figures and movements in the US dollar could determine whether gold sustains its recovery or encounters renewed selling pressure.

ASX Gold Stocks Extend Gains

The improvement in bullion prices coincided with positive trading across several major Australian-listed gold producers.

  • Northern Star Resources Limited (ASX: NST): The stock traded near AU$24.230, recording a gain of approximately 0.83%.
  • Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN): The stock traded around AU$13.055, recording a gain of approximately 1.52%.
  • Newmont Corporation (ASX: NEM): The stock traded around AU$167.640, recording a gain of approximately 2.66%.
  • Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD): The stock traded near AU$7.330, recording a gain of approximately 3.39%.
  • Perseus Mining Limited (ASX: PRU): The stock traded around AU$6.325, recording a gain of approximately 1.52%.

Genesis Minerals recorded the strongest percentage advance among the five companies, highlighting renewed buying interest across the Australian gold-mining sector.

Gold Market Outlook and Future Prospects

Gold's near-term direction will likely depend on US bond yields, Federal Reserve expectations and geopolitical developments. Continued moderation in yields could support bullion prices, while persistent inflation or renewed dollar strength may limit further advances.

For Australian gold miners, sustained bullion strength could improve revenue prospects and operating margins, although production costs, currency fluctuations and company-specific execution risks remain significant.

Overall, gold's recovery reflects improving market conditions, but sustained gains will require supportive economic data and greater clarity surrounding US monetary policy.
