ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.92%, Lifted by Telecommunication Services
By the end of trading session on 27 January 2026, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.92% higher at 8,941.60. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.
Telecommunications Services and Materials were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.70% and 1.35% in their values. On the other hand, Information Technology and A-REIT was the top-losing sector, losing 0.23% and 0.22% in its value.
Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX) and Capstone Copper Corp. (ASX: CSC) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.310% and 7.491% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Alcoa Corporation (ASX: AAI) and Life360 Inc. (ASX: 360) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.853% and 8.642% in their stock prices.
DroneShield shares slid 6 per cent, even after the company reported a year-on-year doubling of revenue in the December quarter.
Fortescue Metals Group added 1.3 per cent after acquiring the remaining shares of dual-listed Alta Copper for C$1.40 (AU$1.47) per share, strengthening its exposure to copper.
Metcash shares rose 1.2 per cent following the announcement that Bruce Sabatta will take over as chief executive of its food service and convenience division from next month.
Karoon Energy, which focuses on Brazilian assets, gave up earlier gains and was trading flat after reporting lower December-quarter production compared with the September quarter.
The Australian dollar climbed to around US69.40¢, hovering near a three-year high, as markets increasingly priced in a potential Reserve Bank rate hike next month.
Australia’s three-year government bond yield reached a fresh two-year high on Tuesday, driven by expectations the Reserve Bank could raise the cash rate as early as next week. The yield rose to 4.27 per cent, a level last seen in November 2023.
At the time of writing, global equity markets were mixed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.64 per cent, the S&P 500 gaining 0.50 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite higher by about 0.43 per cent.
In Asia and Europe, the Hang Seng Index was up 1.24 per cent, while the FTSE 100 edged 0.05 per cent higher.
