Arafura Rare Earths Limited (ASX: ARU) announced on 12 October 2026 that it had executed a binding offtake agreement with a leading global raw materials trading company for the supply of critical rare earth products. The agreement follows a binding term sheet announced on 13 May 2026, with the contracted annual volume increasing from 500 tonnes to 850 tonnes of NdPr oxide.
The trading partner has been selected under the US government's Project Vault initiative, which aims to strengthen critical mineral reserves and develop more resilient supply chains for American manufacturing. According to Arafura, the counterparty generates approximately US$10 billion in annual revenue, operates more than 20 offices worldwide and trades over 50 commodities.
Agreement Covers Five Years of Supply
Under the terms of the agreement, annual deliveries will gradually increase to 850 tonnes of NdPr oxide once Arafura reaches nameplate production. The contract also covers associated heavy rare earths, broadening the scope of the supply arrangement.
The agreement has an initial duration of five years, with an additional two-year extension available if both parties agree. This structure provides a defined supply framework while allowing flexibility for a longer commercial relationship. The contract will take effect once the standard pre-agreement requirements have been fulfilled.
Transparent Pricing Linked to Global Benchmarks
Pricing under the contract will be denominated in US dollars and determined using independent global seaborne pricing indices. Potential benchmarks include recently established indices from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence and the North American pricing index published by S&P Global Platts.
Using recognised market benchmarks is intended to provide a transparent basis for determining prices. The final commercial outcome will depend on the applicable pricing mechanism and prevailing market conditions.
Rare earth elements play a key role in advanced manufacturing, particularly in producing permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and other technologies. Securing long-term offtake arrangements can help producers establish commercial relationships and improve visibility over future product sales.
Arafura Continues Offtake Discussions
Arafura stated that it remains in discussions with several other potential offtake partners. The company also indicated that it will generally avoid identifying counterparties in future disclosures unless their identities are considered material, in order to protect commercially sensitive information and its negotiating position.
The binding agreement represents a further commercial milestone for Arafura as it advances its rare earth supply ambitions. However, the announcement does not disclose the counterparty's identity or provide a fixed contract price.
ARU Share Price Update
Arafura Rare Earths shares were quoted at AU$0.170, up AU$0.005 or 3.03%, based on the supplied market data. Investors may monitor further project developments, progress towards nameplate production and additional offtake agreements for updates on the company's commercial outlook.
