Australia Faces Severe Climate Threats by 2050, Government Warns

Sep 16, 2025

Highlights:

  • Climate Warning: National Climate Risk Assessment projects severe impacts on industries, health, and communities by 2050.
  • Economic Toll: Property values could drop by A$600b and heat-related deaths rise over 400% without stronger action.
  • Policy Focus: Government to announce 2035 emissions target this week, expected to exceed 60% cuts from 2005 levels.

National Climate Risk Assessment Released

Australia’s primary industries, regional communities, and health services are expected to face very high or severe climate change risks by 2050, according to the government’s newly released National Climate Risk Assessment. The detailed report, compiled by the Australian Climate Service, outlines significant threats to the economy, environment, and public health if urgent climate action is not taken. At the time of writing, the government is preparing to announce its 2035 emissions reduction target, with expectations of a cut of more than 60% from 2005 levels.

Economic and Health Consequences

The report highlights alarming projections: property values could fall by more than A$600 billion by 2050, heat-related deaths may surge by over 400%, and businesses could face up to 2.7 million lost workdays annually by 2061 due to extreme heat events. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the findings as a “wake-up call” for those doubting the economic and social impacts of climate change. “Every flood, cyclone, or bushfire carries a massive cost for Australia,” he said, urging stronger commitment to emissions reduction.

Balancing Climate Action and Economic Costs

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen reinforced the government’s stance, stating: “The cost of inaction will always outweigh the cost of action.” Opposition Leader Sussan Ley stressed the need for reassurance rather than “alarmist warnings,” while Nationals senator Matt Canavan accused the government of cherry-picking science to stir fear.

Looking Ahead

The government’s emissions target, expected to be unveiled this week, will be pivotal in shaping Australia’s climate strategy through 2035. With renewable energy central to the plan, policymakers face the challenge of accelerating rollout while managing community and industry concerns.
