Actinogen Medical Highlights Promising Depression Trial Results in Peer-Reviewed Publication
Actinogen Medical Limited (ASX: ACW) announced that the Phase 2 proof-of-concept trial for its lead drug candidate, Xanamem (emestedastat), has been published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, reinforcing the treatment’s potential in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and cognitive impairment. The peer-reviewed study indicated clinically meaningful antidepressant activity in a difficult-to-treat patient population, while confirming that the therapy was safe and well tolerated.
The trial enrolled 165 participants, many of whom continued background antidepressant therapy during the study. Xanamem demonstrated significant improvements in depression symptoms, particularly during the follow-up period, although no additional benefit was observed for cognitive impairment compared with placebo. The publication also highlighted the drug’s novel mechanism of targeting brain cortisol, supporting its continued development. Actinogen stated that the findings may strengthen future clinical development opportunities, while topline results from the ongoing Phase 2b/3 Alzheimer’s disease trial remain on track for release in November 2026.
