Mid-Market: S&P/ASX 200 Trading Higher; Despite Energy Stocks Tumbling

On 24 June 2025, at AEST 12:30 PM, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 is trading higher today, gaining 97.50 points or 1.15%, and is currently trading at 8,572.40 levels. Out of 11, 9 sectors are trading higher along with the gain in the S&P/ASX 200.

The Financial and Information Technology sectors are the top 2 gaining sectors, gaining 1.78% and 1.74% in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Utilities sectors are the top 2 declining sectors, declining 4.34% and 2.04% in their index values.

HMC Capital Limited (ASX: HMC) and Zip Co Limited (ASX: ZIP) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.158% and 6.678% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) and Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 10.168% and 7.699% in their stock prices.

Factors influencing the market-

  • The S&P/ASX 200 is trading higher, despite energy stocks tumbling, after US President Donald Trump announced a tentative ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
  • Collins Foods, which operates 288 of the 750 KFC fast food outlets in Australia, soared by 17% despite reporting an 88.5% slide in net profit after tax for the 12 months ending April 27, as investors bet the bottom has been reached. Chief executive Xavier Simonet also said lower interest rates were starting to help consumer sentiment in Australia.
  • Treasury Wine Estates’s shares are rising today, despite cutting its 2025-26 growth projections for its flagship Penfolds brand, as it also flagged a 5% share buyback this year.
  • Qantas shares have rocketed more than 3% in early trading, signalling that the oil price slump could be good news for Virgin Australia as it prepares to start trading.
  • Oil extended its slump and US futures jumped after Trump posted on social media after the close of US trading that there would be a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He said the ceasefire would begin in about six hours and then the war would be “considered ended”.
  • The Dow has closed up by 0.89%, the S&P 500 closed up by 0.96%, and the NASDAQ ended higher by 0.94%.
  • Hang Seng is up by 1.60%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.10%.
