Market Alert: Gold and Silver Extend Bull Run Amid Global Uncertainty

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.67%, Dragged down by A-REIT

By the end of trading session on 17 September 2025, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.28% lower at 8,818.50. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Utilities and Energy were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.83% and 0.52% in it’s value. On the other hand, A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.58% and 1.05% in it’s value.

Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) and Pilbara Minerals Limited (ASX: PLS) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.205% and 4.147% in their stock prices. On the other hand, New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC) and Deep Yellow Limited  (ASX: DYL) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.297% and 7.933% in their stock prices.

  • DroneShield Limited (ASX: DRO) edged up 1.9% to $3.20 after revealing it had secured US$7.9 million in new contracts with the US Department of Defense.
  • New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC) slumped 8.3% to $4.20, marking a six-week low, following Macquarie’s downgrade from buy to neutral.
  • Deep Yellow Limited (ASX: DYL) dropped 7.9% to $1.91 as uranium prices eased and investors absorbed news of Paladin’s $300 million capital raise.
  • Gold reached a new all-time high as traders positioned for a potential US Federal Reserve rate cut this week and considered the likelihood of further easing.
  • Brent crude oil also slipped, trading at $68.01 compared to its previous close of $68.18.
  • Global equity markets were mixed: in the US, the Dow Jones fell 0.27%, the S&P 500 declined 0.13%, and the Nasdaq slipped 0.07%. 
  • Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.76%, while London’s FTSE 100 lost 0.88%.
