ACCC Refers Ampol’s Acquisition of EG Australia to Phase 2 for In-Depth Review.
Ampol Retail Holding Pty Ltd (ASX: ALD) has been notified by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that its proposed acquisition of EG Group Australia and EG AsiaPac Holdings (collectively, EG Australia) will undergo a Phase 2 review. After conducting its Phase 1 assessment, the ACCC found that the acquisition may reduce competition significantly in the retail supply of petrol and diesel across various Australian regions. The merger would combine two prominent fuel retailers, and the ACCC identified 115 EG locations where the deal could harm competition, particularly in major cities such as Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney. Ampol’s proposal to sell 19 retail fuel sites was deemed insufficient to resolve these concerns. As a result, the ACCC will continue its Phase 2 investigation, inviting submissions until 4 February 2026. This review marks the first under the new mandatory merger notification regime, which came into effect on 1 January 2026.
