Why Did This ASX Media Giant's Shares Jump Over 3%?

Highlights:

  • News Corporation continued executing its US$1 billion share repurchase program.
  • The company repurchased 62,323 shares on 29 July 2026.
  • Total buybacks under the program have reached approximately US$394.02 million.

News Corporation (ASX: NWS) shares gained more than 3% on 30 July, closing at AU$47.01, after the media giant released its latest daily buy-back notification. The update showed that the company remains active under its previously announced US$1 billion share repurchase program, a move aimed at enhancing shareholder value through disciplined capital management.

Steady Progress on Share Buyback

According to the filing, News Corporation repurchased 62,323 Class A common shares on 29 July 2026 for a total consideration of approximately US$1.79 million. The shares were acquired at prices ranging up to US$29.06, demonstrating the company’s continued execution of its capital return strategy. The latest purchase forms part of the company's 2025 Repurchase Program, which authorises the acquisition of up to US$1 billion worth of Nasdaq-listed Class A and Class B common stock. The repurchase plan applies only to the company's Nasdaq-listed shares, with ASX-listed CDIs excluded. Purchases may be made periodically, subject to prevailing market conditions and other relevant factors.

Capital Returns Continue to Build

The latest disclosure revealed that News Corporation has now spent approximately US$394.02 million under the buyback program, highlighting steady progress towards the authorised limit. Before the latest transaction, the company had already repurchased more than 10.03 million shares, with the recent buyback adding further to the cumulative total. The company has indicated that the share repurchase initiative forms part of its broader strategy to create long-term value for investors. Reducing the number of shares in circulation can strengthen key per-share financial metrics and may reflect management's confidence in the company's future prospects. The buyback can proceed without shareholder approval and is open to eligible investors without foreign participation restrictions.

Why the Market Is Watching

Although the announcement did not introduce new operational developments, the continued pace of buybacks reinforced News Corporation's commitment to returning capital to shareholders. Investors often interpret sustained repurchase activity as a sign of financial strength and management confidence, particularly when supported by an ongoing billion-dollar authorisation.Note- All data presented is based on information available at the time of writing.Disclaimer for Kapitales ResearchThe materials provided by Kapitales Research, including articles, news, data, reports, opinions, images, charts, and videos ("Content"), are intended for personal, non-commercial use only.
