3 ASX Stocks Surge as Defence Momentum and Institutional Moves Spark Fresh Buying Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Codan Limited climbed 8.56% as strong defence demand and its FY26 growth outlook supported investor sentiment.
  • Alcoa Corporation gained 7.81% after FMR LLC and related entities disclosed a 6.4% beneficial interest.
  • Electro Optic Systems Holdings advanced 7.37% despite a change in State Street’s reported voting interest.

Market Movers in Focus

The Australian market witnessed strong buying interest across a selection of defence, industrial and technology-linked stocks on 12 August 2026, with Codan Limited (ASX: CDA), Alcoa Corporation (ASX: AAI) and Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (ASX: EOS) all recording gains of more than 7%. While the catalysts differed across the three companies, stronger investor attention around defence spending, institutional positioning and company-specific developments helped drive the moves.

Codan Gains as Defence Exposure Strengthens

Codan Limited (ASX: CDA) rose 8.56% to AU$44.24, emerging as the strongest performer among the three stocks. Investor attention remained focused on the company’s exposure to rising global defence expenditure, geopolitical tensions and growing demand for counter-unmanned aerial systems.

Codan’s FY26 outlook remains a key catalyst, with the company expecting EBIT of approximately AU$235 million and NPAT of around AU$170 million, representing more than 60% growth over FY25. Communications revenue is expected to grow towards the upper end of its 15–20% target range, while the segment’s profit margin is forecast at 30%.

Alcoa Attracts Institutional Attention

Alcoa Corporation (ASX: AAI) advanced 7.81% to AU$78.92. A Schedule 13G filing revealed that FMR LLC and related entities beneficially owned approximately 16.996 million shares, equivalent to 6.4% of Alcoa’s outstanding common stock, as of 30 June 2026. The filing stated that the securities were held in the ordinary course of business and were not acquired to influence or change control of the company.

EOS Rallies Despite State Street Change

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (ASX: EOS) gained 7.37% to AU$8.59. State Street’s substantial-holder notice showed its voting interest declining from 6.44% to 5.14%. However, the filing indicates that the reported changes involved securities lending and collateral transactions, rather than simply representing an outright institutional sell-down. Multiple transactions dated 30 July 2026 involved State Street Bank and Trust Company lending securities or receiving collateral.

What Investors Are Watching

The three stocks demonstrate different catalysts behind their latest rallies. Codan continues to benefit from structural defence demand and an upbeat earnings outlook, while Alcoa has attracted attention following a significant institutional ownership disclosure. EOS, meanwhile, has maintained strong market momentum despite changes in reported institutional interests. Together, the moves highlight continued investor focus on defence technology, industrial businesses and institutional capital flows. The sustainability of the rallies will ultimately depend on whether these catalysts translate into stronger operating performance and continued market confidence.Note- All data presented is based on information available at the time of writing.Disclaimer for Kapitales ResearchThe materials provided by Kapitales Research, including articles, news, data, reports, opinions, images, charts, and videos ("Content"), are intended for personal, non-commercial use only.
